The latest ‘timebomb’ issue attracting trade press comments is the growing number of claims by purchasers of leasehold property against their professional advisers for failures to forewarn about downstream ground rent uplifts.

The HM Courts & Tribunals Service is now accepting applications for probate grants online, at present restricted to sole executors appointed by non-complex English wills, dispensing with need for sworn affidavits. The Law Society has welcomed the new system, albeit with cautious warnings and encouragements of vigilance against frauds. 

Complaints against the Judiciary have fallen by 18%; and disciplinary sanctions against judges, or removals of them, have also dropped.

Claims management company National Accident Helpline has increased its bank borrowings from £9m to £25 million to fund ambitious expansion plans.

Nina Bracewell Smith, a Monaco-based former shareholder of Arsenal football club, has issued claims against law firm Linklaters and accountants Deloittes for alleged negligence in their handling of her now regretted sale of her 16% stake in 2013 to Stan Kroenke (now the club’s majority shareholder).

Brexit: The legal implications and complexities continue to challenge everyone involved, but at least there are some basics in place at last, including a Government resolve, published last month, that a continuing formal reciprocal judicial relationship with the EU will be essential after March 2019.

The MOD is investing in new or refurbished waiting rooms in selected courts, with children’s toys and comfy seats, to reduce the trauma for victims and witnesses giving evidence.
