The Law Society’s Junior Lawyers Division has reported a 100% upsurge in the number of legal trainees suffering mental health issues. Meanwhile, the definitions and debate as to what constitutes bullying – eg projections of self-confidence by a senior person received by a junior colleague as a diminution of theirs – is getting airtime at highest levels, including self-recriminations from the former Supreme Court President, Lord Neuberger, at a recent International Bar Association event.

A new professional body for private prosecutors, the Private Prosecutors’ Association, has been launched, pledging a rigorous code of conduct, to fill the space left by under-resourced public prosecution services.

A north London coroner’s ‘cab rank’ approach, refusing to prioritise burials applications made urgent for purely religious reasons, has been declared unlawful by the High Court. 

The three current publicly quoted law firms, Gateley, Gordon Dadds and Keystone, are being joined by Rosenblatt, whose ‘initial public offering’ is targeted to raise £43 million. Meanwhile Australian public company Slater & Gordon is ’consolidating’ by closing two more of its UK offices…

The Bar Standards Authority has published various statistics showing some diversity improvement among entrants to the profession: for the first time, more than half of new pupillages have been obtained by women; but only 23% of ethnic minority graduates of the Bar training course have found places.
