The latest firm to close its brand in face of pressures on mid-sized long-established regional law firms is Burroughs Day in Bristol, which has closed doors after 188 years because declining turnover and a rising cost base has eroded profitability. Most of its people and operations have been moved to another firm apparently better adapted to necessary economies of scale and process… We’ll see.

Naughty claimants:

-          A claimant has been ordered to repay the £20k damages so far received by him after social media searches made months later revealed undisclosed close connections between Claimant and the defendant driver.

-          The nets are closing on claimants who dishonestly fabricate or exaggerate parts of their claim, even if other parts are substantiable. There have been at least three higher court cases in recent months in which entire claims have been thrown out after revelations of inappropriate ‘embellishments’ which “substantially affected the presentation of his case”.

The Solicitors Regulation Authority and Law Society:

-  The SRA has published its desire to ensure public confidence in its independence by severing entirely its statutory [Legal Services Act 2007] umbilical linkage with the Law Society and to operate with its own separate constitution and accounts.

- Senior positions in both organisations are still preponderantly male, causing the gender pay gap to exceed 5%, even though lower ranks are roughly equal.

There are 768 English/Welsh law firms whose personal injury claims work comprises more than half of their turnover; now threatened by imminent procedural reforms.
