Andrew Hopper, co-author of the Solicitors Handbook and an esteemed force for balance in the relentless straitening of solicitors’ regulatory freedoms, has died. He leaves a big hole.

The English Cricket Board has appointed a solicitor to be its first Director of its new Integrity Department to police discipline in the game.

The Legal Services Consumer Panel has reported that almost 90% of consumer purchasers of legal services are satisfied -the highest level for eight years; that the proportion who shop around or consult comparison sites, rather than sticking with firms of first choice, remains static, at about 27%; and that the take-up of fixed fee engagements (rather than hourly rate) now exceeds 50%.

Libra Managers, a Lloyd’s-backed agency providing indemnity insurance cover for 20 of the top-200 law firms, is pulling out of the market in wake of substantial losses last year. Meanwhile brokers Marsh have launched a new scheme offering bespoke-priced insurance packages to small/medium firms with long track records.

The take up of mediations for disputes resolutions has grown by 20% since 2016, exceeding 12,000 cases last year.

The SRA’s annual risk outlook has recorded £20m lost to cyber crimes against law firms in the past two years; and further millions paid out by the Solicitors Compensation Fund to victims of dubious investment schemes.

The Legal Services Board has announced plans to ensure that regulators of accountancy firms who provide legal services will be overseen and policed according to the same standards as apply to other legal professional regulators, correcting what has hitherto not been a level field. ‘Big Four’ accountancy firm EY has recently announced its acquisition of Riverview Law in a multi-disciplinary practice for which it has raised substantial funding.
